Case Study

VSC HVDC for Offshore Wind Farms

Client locations:

Germany
Services: Renewables
Client/Project Profile:

This project involved a VSC HVDC link connecting offshore wind generation in the North Sea to a connection point onshore. Our client for this project is the Owner of the VSC link.

Requirements:

TGS was asked to provide engineering support services for the Owner of the offshore VSC HVDC project. The services initially began with a review of the project schedule/status, with the goal being to provide the support needed to aid in getting the project into service on time. The engineering services then went on to continue to provide support to the project owner through the remaining stages of the project coming in to service, as well as support after in-service.

Solution:

TGS successfully supported the project getting in-service, performing Factory Acceptance Test witnessing and providing on-site commissioning support. We continue to support the Owner with fault and event analysis today.

Outcome:

TGS engineers applied their vast and practical VSC HVDC experience to help our client with the execution of the project. In the process, we gained further invaluable experience being on-site and working together with the client and manufacturer’s engineers.

Our engineers integrated seamlessly into the client’s project team, travelling to site or client offices whenever our presence was needed, which helped to keep the project schedule moving ahead.

We have developed a relationship of mutual respect and trust with the client, and continue to work with them on this and other projects.

Our practical on-site experience with VSC HVDC began with the world’s first MMC VSC HVDC link – the TransBay Cable in San Francisco USA, and continues to grow as valued customers trust TGS’s expertise to support their VSC HVDC projects, from system studies and model development to Owner’s Engineer services.
